Formby Parish Councillor Carol Richards has turned her hand to mask-making in response to the coronavirus PPE shortage.
Carol, who will also stand as a candidate for Labour in next year’s local elections, started making face masks last month. Carol dusted off her own grandmother’s old Singer sewing machine and got to work.
She said: “I did some research to find out how to make non-surgical masks and found a pattern so I started making them during lockdown at home using a variety of left-over funky materials. initially for family and friends and also for vulnerable older people in Formby.
“Since then I have had requests that I can’t keep up with. I also have been asked to do online courses in how to make them.”
Carol joined a group who are making critical care gowns called the Scrub Hub Lancs
The critical care gowns are made out of two layers of typical duvet cover material, sewn inside out then turned the other way and the hem then finished, then 2 inches of Velcro then added to each shoulder. When made the garments need washing and drying, and they go into the plastic bags having been freshly washed.
