West Lancashire Deserves Better
On May 6th you will get to vote in local elections. Councils of all political parties up and down the country are being forced to increase council tax year on year, because of continued government cuts to local council budgets, which equate to 38% or £10bn since 2010.
Yet Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak want to hike up council tax and make families pay. Their £1.9bn bombshell will cost a family in the Council Tax Band D, £90 on average.
This government wasted £22bn of taxpayers’ money on a testing system that doesn’t work, but now can’t find the money to support families struggling to make ends meet.
That’s why West Lancashire Labour are today calling on the Government to put families first by backing local councils with funding and stop council tax rises.
We are also calling on the government to fully compensate cash-strapped councils for the money they have been forced to spend on the Coronavirus Pandemic – and NOT to pass the burden of the cost on to West Lancashire council taxpayers.
