Sign petition against Cameron's plan for 'fixed term' rule
Council tenants would lose their right to a home for life under plans unveiled by David Cameron.
The PM said fixed term contracts should be issued so that people can be evicted if they get a job or start earning more.
Cameron already plans to slash housing benefit for poor families in private accommodation - in a move that will force thousands from their homes.
These two plans could have a devastating impact on people in the North West.
John Denham, Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, said:
"Before the election the Tories said Labour was scaremongering when we said they would end secure tenancies. Now we know Labour was right and they were not telling the truth.
"Every council tenant needs to know what this means: Get a well paid job and lose your home. See your children leave home and you lose yours. Have your partner die, you lose your home.
"This is a Tory Governmen t more vicious than we have seen since the war."
Shadow Housing Minister John Healey MP added:
"David Cameron has let the cat out of the bag on the Tories' secret agenda to remove security of tenure."
Eileen Short, of Defend Council Housing, said:
"It is completely ill-conceived. Instead of creating communities it will create pockets of poverty and despair."
Housing Magazine, Inside Housing, revealed this month (August) that the Tories held meetings with 'key housing figures' before the election to discuss plans to remove security of tenure.
And in a worrying development one Tory Council has already started making cold calls to tenants warning them about housing cuts.
It's reported that those who have one bedroom too many have been told to 'move now'.
