Afzal Khan MEP, Labour’s candidate in the Manchester, Gorton by-election, commenting on the triggering of Article 50, said:
“Today marks the beginning of important negotiations as the UK prepares to leave the EU. I supported remain but, the British people made the decision to leave the European Union and I respect that decision. My job now, and the job of the Labour Party, is to make sure we get the best deal for Manchester, our region and the country.
“There will be things that change as a result. I am determined to use my experience to make sure those changes work for the people of Manchester, so no one and no community is left behind. Protection for jobs and living standards is my priority.
“Labour has set clear red lines of full access to the European market, rights at work. I will be playing my part to hold the Government to account for the people of Manchester every step of the way.”
